Strange to think everyone isn't doing this, but it's pretty common for corporate folks to miss this. Good advice always seems the simplest.

Want To Add JobsinSocialMedia.com to Your Resume?

I bought this network a couple of years ago and grew it from 100 to 1300 members, but haven't really had the time to manage it properly. Those of you who had to wait to get approved know this - and I'm sure we'd all like to get more value from it.

So I'm looking for an editor or admin. It's not paid, but there are worse things in life than having jobsinsocialmedia.com on your resume. You'll have to have some experience in the field - this isn't entry level, but I need someone with the… Continue

How To Network On This Social Network

As JobsinSocialMedia.com has grown from 100 to almost 1300 members, some basic truths are emerging. You get into it what you put into it. Many of you joined simply to add the SEO to your name, which is great - I'm glad you did.

Others are seeking employment or looking to hire others here - that too is fantastic.

And many of you are looking to break into social media either as a new graduate or as someone looking for a career change.

Stop Selling Social Media To Your Clients

If you're a consultant, this little piece of advice is going to help you make a lot of money this year. Stop selling Social Media to your clients.

You heard me.

I started doing this in 2006, and while I was able to generate dozens of clients who would pay for my services. The benefits were online exposure, SEO ranking, and clients leads, but these were small benefits compared to what I really wanted, which was to transform their marketing services and boost their profitability. The problem was… Continue

On Being Negative In Social Media

I was having a conversation with a friend of mine yesterday - he was talking about the commercial potential of Foursquare, and even noted that Mashable thinks FourSquare will be the next Twitter or Facebook.

I guffawed - or snorted, or something, because my wife felt it important enough to give me a bit of a dressing down later. As she pointed out, not everyone has been in the trenches as long as I have, and the wonder of social media, which is so important for the initial success of new softwa… Continue

Hi Jim,
I've been self-studying internet marketing and social media for the past 12 months now. Thank you for this community since it seems like the most useful community I came across in this area on the web!

I'm looking for my next job to be in social media. I'd like to be a social media manager and run a few fantastic communities (such as GreenlightCommunity.com for which I'm a moderator). I'm an educated media user. I really would love to do more with social media and a combination of my creative ideas.

What advice do you have for me? How can I build my portfolio to walk into my next job in 6 months?

Thanks so much,
Sana

Hi Jim: Some great things happening on this site! Do you also maintain the jobs listing? I notice that jobs for Toronto, Ontario, Canada are listed under Toronto, OH instead of the correct Toronto, ON. Is that something you can correct?

Cheers!

Thanks, Jim - it certainly would be ideal if I could marry my experience in online communities with my food/cooking obsession. I've heard through the grapevine that CondeNet cut a huge number of staff at the end of 2008 and is pushing a lot of their online content/community stuff down to the magazine staffs, who have themselves had to cut and are now wondering how they're going to do it all. I do think there's an opportunity there. Just have to figure out how to snag it!
